Book Review: 2 States

When I asked my grandfather to track down this book, he immediately recognized the author's name and assured me it was worthwhile. The author, Chetan Bhagat, is a well known Indian novelist that writes about nationalism from the modern Indian perspective. His books have also been made into movies.

This story is loosely based on the author's own love story and subsequent marriage. He was from Punjab and the love of his life, from Tamil Nadu. If you know anything about Indians, you know that this is a recipe for trouble.

Bhagat does a hilarious job of highlighting the differences and pokes fun at both the Tamilians and Punjabis. He also makes the point that these regional differences should not matter and that Indian is Indian. (I agree!)

My dad read this book on the flight back from India and also loved it. It's a quick read (see previous sentence) and is, at times, laugh out loud funny. I highly recommend this book-- especially if you are familiar with Indian culture.

  2. My sister married a Gujarati and reading this book reminded me a lot of the story of their marriage, lol. My favorite joke is when the Punjabi mom says that south Indians have a "complexion complexion." So true!

    1. Haha! That part was spot on! My personal fave is Khasi Yatrai part! I busted out laughing...which rarely happens when I am reading.
