It’s been 10 years and it still feels like it was just yesterday. I was walking to 8th grade homeroom when a friend ran up from behind and told me a plane had crashed into the Twin Towers. I shrugged it off as just another plane accident. I didn't fully understand the significance until I started watching the news coverage. It was surreal. I was in complete disbelief.

I was never really affected by the "terrorist attack" angle of this significant day. What moved me was what happened because of it. The tears poured when I heard about the men and women that turned into heroes that day. To me, that is the significance of September 11th. It’s not that people got hurt, it’s that people showed up to help. It’s not that we experienced a terrorist attack, it’s that we became united because of it.

If I have no other take-away from September 11th, I want to be grateful. Grateful for the men and women that serve our nation—in any and all capacities. Grateful for my country and my fellow Americans—Republicans included. Grateful for my friends and family—despite the arguments and the disagreements. Grateful for each and every day—we never know when it may be our last.

I hope you take the time to remember and reflect today. It’s remarkable how tragedy brings us together. In a way, that is the most beautiful thing about us.
