Making food choices eventually becomes a habit, a behavior. My food behavior has evolved over the last few years. And although it’s not perfect, I do have a few food behaviors that are on the healthier side.
Of course, I am not a registered dietitian or a doctor. This is just based on my own experiences, opinions and personal knowledge. I eat and live this way because it makes me feel good. Being able to jump out of bed in the morning and have boundless energy is worth more to me than a slice (or three) of pizza. It’s not for everyone but it works for me.
My food behavior:
1. I’m a vegan…duh. No meat, dairy or eggs. This behavior automatically makes me read all the ingredients and makes me more aware of what I am eating. It also introduced me to a whole new world of food and cooking.
2. I stopped eating out. Not only do people tend to overeat when they are at restaurants, but they also tend to eat unhealthy food. I hardly ever eat out anymore. Sometimes, it’s hard to avoid, like birthdays or when you are traveling. In those cases, I order a vegan friendly salad and maybe a vegetable side or two.
3. I ditched the processed foods. If I don’t know what it is or can’t pronounce it, I don’t eat it. This behavior actually makes grocery shopping super easy. I hit up the produce and bulk foods sections and then head to the check out counter.
4. I juice! I juice at least once a day. Currently, I am experimenting with juicing three times a day. I use fresh, organic vegetables and fruits. Sometimes it can be a chore but, I always regret those mornings when I skipped my green juices.
5. I nixed the stimulants addiction. And by this, I mean sugar, coffee, soda and alcohol. I was never a soda drinker and was a coffee drinker by necessity. I partied hard in college but have now learned to be just as ridiculous without being under the influence. Trust me, you don’t need alcohol to make bad decisions. I also don’t consume any sugar. I do sometimes have a little honey. I know that it’s not vegan, but its way more natural than agave these days.
Of course, no one is perfect. Some days I struggle with these behaviors and other days it comes naturally. But, I'll do my best to share it all.
I think it would be cool to expand on these five topics a little more. Maybe talk about the journey, address the struggles and share the various tricks I learned along the way? Would that be interesting? Let me know! I would love your feedback.
Props to you for being vegan and juicing...I can't imgaine how much time that takes.
ReplyDeleteI was never a coffee person to begin with, thank god.
Actually, I'm not even an alcohol person...I don't like the taste.
Personally, I like reading about how people eat out as a vegan. I'd also like to know more about the juicing!
